Communicating Your Freshwater Science with Impact
During main conference programme
Tuesday 2nd December, 11am-12.30pm
No Cost to attend
This interactive workshop presented by the Science Communicators Association of New Zealand (SCANZ) is designed to help freshwater scientists develop the skills needed to communicate their research effectively to different audiences. Clear and engaging communication is essential for connecting scientific knowledge with the wider community including policymakers, mana whenua, educators, and the public.
Participants will explore the importance of understanding audiences to tailor messages that resonate and encourage action. Through practical exercises, attendees will learn how to simplify complex freshwater science into compelling narratives that avoid jargon and suit a variety of settings such as brief pitches, community meetings or media interviews.
The workshop includes activities such as creating concise research summaries within time limits, adapting messages for specific audiences and using storytelling to make scientific findings memorable and relevant. Icebreaker improv exercises are used to build confidence, creativity and teamwork.
By the end of the session scientists will have gained practical tools to communicate their work more clearly and persuasively helping to increase the impact of freshwater research across New Zealand. This workshop supports SCANZ’s mission to promote excellence in science communication and to strengthen connections between researchers and the communities they serve.
